The most famous festival in Phuket, the Vegetarian Festival is held annually on the 9th lunar month of the Chinese calendar, usually around September-October. During the festival period, people celebrate the Chinese traditions of maintaining good health, purity of the body and peace of mind through abstinence of meat, alcohol, engaging in sexual acts or immoral behavious like telling lies and killing.
The Por Tor (Hungry Ghost) Festival is a traditional merit-making ethnic-Chinese festival that usually takes place during late-August or early-September. During the festival, people would make merit by offering special foods, flowers, and candles to their ancestors.
